The Egg Stage, Where Every Cockroach Problem Begins.
Cockroach eggs are a major sign of infestation and they’re sneakily well-hidden. Here's a breakdown of what they are, how they look, and what to do if you find them.
What Are Cockroach Eggs?
- Female cockroaches produce egg cases called oothecae.
- Each ootheca can contain 20 to 50 eggs, depending on the species.
- The ootheca is a protective capsule made of a tough, leathery material that shields the eggs from predators and even some insecticides.
What Do They Look Like?
- Small, oval-shaped capsules often tan, brown, or black.
- Size varies by species:
- German cockroach: ~8 mm long
- American cockroach: ~1 cm long
- Brown-banded cockroach: ~6 mm, rust-colored2
- They may resemble coffee granules or tiny purses.
What If You Find One?
- If the egg case is empty, it means baby cockroaches have already hatched and are roaming your home.
- Multiple egg cases = likely infestation.
- Clean thoroughly and consider pest control if you see more than one insect.
How to Get Rid of Them
- Deep clean damp areas and food storage zones.
- Use insecticides specifically designed to target oothecae.
- Seal cracks and crevices to prevent hiding spots.
- • Remove debris, such as cardboard, on which cockroaches like to lay eggs.
